2022 has been a big year for sustainable furniture with lots of new products now incorporating sustainable materials/finishes, as well a rise in demand for exterior furniture, soft curved shapes and bold patterns making a return.
As 2023 fast approaches, the Protocol team take time to reflect on the year and their favourite products that have been launched, popular or featured trendy styles. We asked the Protocol team to each select their ‘product of the year’ and below are their choices.
Martin – Essex
“I have selected the Essex as it seems to be appearing on more and more of my designer’s scheme’s. The Essex lounge chair is sleek, low, and has a retro feel. With the advantage of being able to specify fabric for the seat and back means that alongside the beautifully unique wooden frame makes it pop. It does not look out of place in a high-end hotel or office breakout area, a very strong addition to any situation.”
David – Trill
“Since the covid pandemic we have been supplying lots of exterior furniture to the hospitality market. I particularly like our Trill range of exterior seating which is a great value priced product, in a stylish design and has a side chair, armchair & barstool within the range all made from fiberglass polypropylene, are stackable and includes a large selection of colour finishes.”
Sharon – Hug
“I like how the shape of the polypropylene chairs are completely different to all other chairs in this market. The beautiful curves and a tapered seat make this an elegant design. They are sleek and are a very modern take on what can be, rather dull polypropylene chairs. The modern colour options will work well in a wide variety of projects and the mix of textures on the armchair make this a truly unique price of furniture. The Hug received the special mention of the Archiproducts Design Awards 2022, which rewards products made with eco-friendly and sustainable choices.”
Anthony – Chesterfield
“A sentimental choice as being new to the company, one of my first orders was for some of the 2 seater Chesterfield models. I love that it’s a timeless design and fits perfectly within both modern interiors and classic environments alike.”
Chris – Gladiator
“My choice is the Gladiator. It’s a versatile, stylish option which will compliment any hospitality project. It has a different look to the standard table bases and comes in coffee, dining, poseur or bespoke sizes. It’s competitively priced and I look forward to seeing it on more projects in 2023.”
Dawn – Summer
“The Summer range is bright, comfortable and represents the season it is named for perfectly. It includes tables of different heights and multi-coloured stackable chairs that make a perfect addition to any outdoor contract area.”
Sanjita – Agami
“The Agami was one of my favourite new collections launched at Salone del Mobile this year. It’s a simple yet stylish range available in wood and metal versions allowing it to adapt to different environments.”
Mike – Clessidra
“I would say the Clessidra as it’s a great little pouf, with an unusual design which I think is aesthetically pleasing. It looks great in the various different powder coated finishes combined with the upholstered seat and comes in 2 sizes.”
Jo – MrArmand
“The MrArmand armchair is my choice. I love the minimal, stylish design which I think offers something different for both indoor or outdoor areas. It can be supplied in a range of painted finishes and has a generous sized upholstered seat cushion which can be removed.”
Demi – Kampus Bespoke
“The Kampus has been one of our most popular bespoke ranges this year and it’s been great to see it in some projects we have worked on including Atul Kochhar’s’ Masalchi restaurant and the University of Hertfordshire’s Student union bar ‘Seventy Seven’. It fits into the industrial, casual dining environment really nicely and as it’s a bespoke item can be made to any size and in any finish.”
Ola – Okito
“I would say the Okito range. They have true commitment to sustainability, and it comes through everything they do. I love how considered the design is a true testament to the fact that simplicity can be impactful too.”
